Generations of Support from the So Family
Marion So has been a cheerful and welcoming member of the La Jolla YMCA family for more than 40 years.
"The Y is my home away from home," Marion explains. "I love the Y because of the people."
The Y has not only been an important part of Marion's life, but also her family's.
"The Y has always been there for our multigenerational family," says Annie So, Marion's daughter and current board chair of the La Jolla YMCA. "My brother and I learned to swim and play tennis here when we were kids and our kids have attended camp and also learned to swim here. I personally love the camaraderie that develops in the exercise classes. The friendships keep me coming back."
Thankful for all that the Y has provided to their family, the Sos have supported the La Jolla YMCA through multiple capital contributions. Annie says that the family "continues to support the Y because we know what it has meant in our lives and we want to be able to share that experience with as many other people in our community as possible."
In 2005, Marion donated funds for a new multipurpose exercise studio when the Y converted old racquetball courts into new, much needed spaces. To promote the La Jolla Y's recent capital campaign—a major renovation to the entire complex— the So family donated funds to support the creation of an additional exercise studio. They hope that this studio will allow the La Jolla Y to accommodate and positively affect the lives of more of its members.
The So family will continue to support the YMCA for many generations to come, thanks to their membership in the YMCA's Heritage Club. The Heritage Club honors those who make a direct or planned gift to the Y's endowment fund. Thanks to the altruism of supporters like the So family, the YMCA of San Diego County's endowment fund is stronger than ever, ensuring that YMCA programs will always be accessible to the people who need them most.
