Helping Kids Build Character at Camp
With a household to run, a job to clock into and five kids to keep up with, Selena is a hard-working mom. During busy weeks and stressful days, she has peace of mind that the YMCA is there to support her and her family.
A few years ago, Selena enrolled a few of her kids in the day camp program offered at the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA. With the support of a scholarship, she found the program to be affordable and convenient. She also found that the Y camps and after-school programs offered her kids a safe, fun and high-quality experience.
When Selena speaks about her kids' enthusiasm for dance day camp and basketball day camp, the pride in her voice is unmistakable. "Desiree was practicing at home every night for the performance they put on for families," she says. "She told everyone that week to come and watch her in the show. Devin came home Friday with a medal earned during the last day of basketball camp. He showed it to our whole family and put it up on his wall."
Moments when kids take the stage for the first time or choose a place on the wall for their own medal can help define who they are. These moments build character and confidence, and also show kids that they are talented individuals with the capability of achieving their goals.
With a gift in your estate plan, you can help provide scholarship opportunities for families like Selena's, which create these moments and fuel brighter futures for kids across San Diego County.
